How Many People Play 'near' You?

I thought I would do something a little different today and ask a question to all of you Vita owners out there: How many people have their Vita connected online near you? If you have the ‘near‘ app enabled on your system, you should be able to tell.

For those of you who do not know, “Near is the social networking app on the PS Vita that allows you to check in to real life locations and pick-up and or leave gifts for other gamers to find and use in their games. You can also locate and connect with your PlayStation®Network friends and other gamers nearby. With near you can check out which games are the most popular and highest rated by fellow gamers near your location.

Through near your location can be calculated through Wi-Fi hot spots or in 3G models, with use of GPS technology which is an exclusive capability of the 3G model. Be the first to find these valuable game gifts by logging into near via 3G and not waiting to get to a WiFi hot spot.” – Official PlayStation Description

I use my Vita almost every day and have used it regularly since its launch almost a year ago in February 2012. Since then, I have kept tabs on my near activity. I have set it to update automatically on my system, so I get updates to those playing around me at regular intervals. At first, I was one of the few in my area here in the suburbs of Miami with a Vita. Around the launch, there were a handful of people visible on near. Within a few weeks, that number grew to about 30. However, the peak activity within a .5 – 1 mile radius has always been around 50-60 players. Last night however, I got a pretty interesting surprise. I saw the blue light on my Vita flashing, which meant I had some sort of notification. I checked it and this is what I found:

To my surprise the peak number in my area (1.2 miles) had just about tripled to 171 people playing nearby. I thought this was interesting and also a bit strange as the handheld has been struggling sales-wise. In fact, Sony just dropped its sales expectations of the system even more over the past few days.

So I thought it would be fun to see how it is in your neck of the woods. I wanted to find out from you guys, how many people play in your area? What has been the highest number of people who you have seen on near and how far from your location? Is your area densely populated? So go ahead, discuss in the comments below! I want to hear from you!

  1. I live near Houston and I generally get about 20 people within a mile or 2.

  2. Bellevue Nebraska, around 20 or so around my house. Not a hugely populated area so its pretty surprising.

  3. I frequently get numbers around 40-60. I’ve seen a few really big ones like this before, though.
