Crysis 3 Multiplayer Open Beta Preview

Crysis 3’s release is quickly approaching and Crytek has opened the doors up for everyone to get a chance to play its new multiplayer. The Crysis 3 Multiplayer beta (open) is available for gamers to download and try out now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. We tried it out and recorded gameplay. Check out the video and hear our thoughts:

The beta is now available to everyone on PC, Xbox360, and PS3.  It was designed by Crytek with the intention of everyone having a perception of the full potential of Crysis 3’s multiplayer.  The beta allows you to create squads with buddies, rank up to level 10, and edit your character with multiple weapons, attachments and their take on perks called suit modules.

The beta includes the maps Museum and Airport with two modes available on both maps.  Crash Site Mode is described by Crytek as the “ultimate King of the Hill type of experience.”  A pod is dropped at random around the map by a dropship and players from both teams must secure this pod to capture the zone and accumulate points.  Think of Headquarters or Hardpoint from the Call of Duty series.  A difference however, is that each pod holds two shields that can be used as it’s namesake or to hurl it for a one hit kill.  All Crash Site maps have a neutral vehicle known as a pinger as well.  Crytek calls the Pinger as a “Walking weapon of mass destruction,” equivalent to a tank from Battlefield.  However, enemy players can hijack the pinger from up top with you still inside.  The mode ends when time runs out or when a team reaches the score of 200.

Hunter mode is a mode that would make Darwin proud: Survial of the fittest.  There are two teams, initially consisting of two permanently cloaked Hunters on one side, and 10 to 14 CELL operatives on the other team.  10 is the number for consoles with 14 being PC exclusive.  Hunters are equipped with nothing but their nanosuit, and Bow & Arrow.  Operatives get a choice between 3 loadouts: Ranger, Sniper, and close quarters.  All operatives also get a sensor grenade to help snuff out cloaked hunters.  Every operative killed by a hunter, then respawns on the Hunter’s team to prey on their former teammates.  If any operative can survive 2 minutes then the hunters lose.  This is a best out of 5 round game mode and is a real blast.

Crash Site Mode is Crytek’s take on king of the hill.  A pod is dropped down onto the map at random intervals and must be secured by either team.  Whichever team holds the most pods when time runs out, or reaches a score of 200 wins the game.  Each pod has two shields that can be interacted with and be used for cover or even as a weapon to throw at enemies.  When a pod is used up, it explodes and takes out any player within the vicinity.  A drop ship then circles around the map before randomly dropping another pod elsewhere on the map.

Now for my Pros and Cons of the beta after 3 hours of gameplay:

Pros about the beta:

  • It is fun
  • No apparent lag issues
  • A wide range of unlockables to try out
  • Hunter mode is one of the best modes I’ve played in an online FPS.
  • The highlight reel at the end of a game is something I would like to see in more games and maybe have it fleshed out and cleared up a bit.  It kind of ends abruptly.
  • Crysis 2 had way too many problems with games disconnecting because of bad hosts or hosts quitting, I haven’t had that issue much at all.  You can view all players’ ping on the scoreboard and every player has their own ping, compared to COD where it’s not a real representation of the ping you’re connecting with.
  • Auto-mute feature stays between games, and even quitting out and going back on.

Cons about the beta:

  • Graphics aren’t up to par with Crysis 2, though this is a beta and they probably dimmed it down to make the download more accessible.  Graphics are known to be polished up right before launch so I’m not too worried on that part.
  • The field of view feels too small or narrow compared to other FPS.  I don’t know if it was deliberate to give the feel of wearing a helmet or not but it takes some getting used to at first.
  • No dedicated servers, so when the host leaves the room or is booted, you go through the host migration and that is no fun.  One time it happened and we were stuck migrating hosts for nearly 2 minutes.
  • The pinger, “a CEPH-constructed walking weapon of mass destruction” as Crytek defines it, seems to be overpowered immensely.
  • Enemies are a little hard to spot amongst teammates.  Crytek has confirmed on twitter they are working on that fix as it seems to be a universal problem.
  • There isn’t really an incentive to work as a team.  There’s no necessity or team bonus applied like you would find in something like Battlefield, SOCOM, or Team Fortress.
