Why Hasn't Microsoft Jumped On The HD Remake Bandwagon?

We live in the day of the remake, we see them all the time lately. I’m not just talking about gaming, but in movies and television as well, it seems that everything old is new again at some point and time. Lately with all the HD remakes coming out, I’ve started to wonder why Microsoft hasn’t jumped at the chance to join in on the fad of releasing games from last generation with a coat of fresh paint and some Achievements. I know what your thinking, Didn’t Microsoft just release Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary? Its true enough that they did release that last year, but I look at Halo CEA as something slightly different from a standard HD remake. They totally used a newer engine over top the old engine, re-recorded all the score and added online, co-op and co-op over Xbox Live. It was basically a reboot of Halo Combat Evolved and it was very well done.

The question I’d like answered is why hasn’t Microsoft jumped on the HD remake craze long before that point? I realize the Xbox 360 has some backwards compatibility, but not every game is fully supported with this feature. There are a lot of original Xbox games that wont run in an Xbox 360, and sometimes the ones that do are a bit glitchy and filled with issues. I am also well aware that the original Xbox didn’t have the game collection as large as the PlayStation 2, but it did have a pretty big following and some nice titles that I’m sure a whole new generation of gamer’s would love to play through.

I think there would be beneficial for Microsoft to release some more HD remakes for a couple of reasons. The first reason to release HD remakes would be money, its obvious people are willing to spend money on games they already have bought in the past, all you have to do is make them shiny and slap some Achievements on there. Speaking of money, it doesn’t cost very much to remaster these older games, its one of the reasons why these other companies are so quick to release these games. Everything comes down to money, Microsoft wouldn’t have to spend very much to fix up some of these games and they’d probably make back a ton of money in return.

One of the cool things about some of the original Xbox games is that a lot of them were already in HD. Microsoft was ahead of their time as far as a HDD and having games fully playable in HD were concerned with the original Xbox. So it should make the whole conversion to HD even easier, your basically just putting in some Achievements and maybe some added online features to take advantage of Xbox Live. I think having something like Xbox Live at your disposal gives an added bonus to anything that comes out on the Xbox 360 and that includes HD remakes.

Something that a lot of people might not have thought of when it comes to HD remakes is getting an IP noticed and popular so that there could possibly be future games from those series. A good example of this would be a game called Blinx The Time Sweeper, which was a very cool and unique original Xbox platform game, it was so popular it even got a sequel, which is actually kind of rare to find these days. If Microsoft were to release these two games in an HD collection, it could garner a whole new fan base and that fan base could basically fund the making of a brand new game in the series.

A lot of people who are new to the Microsoft brand of gaming probably aren’t even familiar with a lot of the classic IP’s that were on the original Xbox. Microsoft actually owns quite a few IP’s that are going to waste, and there are people out there willing to pay money to play the new versions of these games if that were a possibility.

If you were thinking that there aren’t that many people interested in original Xbox titles, think again. You can’t even purchase used original Xbox games at Gamestop or a lot of other used gaming outlets. I’m not sure how the licensing works for some of these, but I do know Microsoft actually published a lot of the games that came out for the original Xbox and who wouldn’t want to play an updated version of Jade Empire?

If something could be worked out I’d love to see this list of original Xbox titles get remade in full HD glory and with Achievements.

  1. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
  2. Jade Empire
  3. Crimson Skies
  4. Conker: Live And Reloaded
  5. Blinx The Time Sweeper
  6. Fable
  7. Halo 2
  8. Panzer Dragoon
  9. Voodoo Vince
  10. Toejam And Earl 3

Now that is just my personal list, luckily we did see The Chronicles Of Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay remade a couple of years ago and it turned out fantastic.

  1. Voodoo Vince was a fantastic game. But the first Blinx: The Time Sweeper was the source of my imagination as a a little kid. Blinx 2: Masters of Time and space was great too but many things were changed and I believe that it’s potential was lost in the attempt to add a first person type style. Otherwise, favorite games of all time. If they do a remake of either or both I would be ecstatic !

Enjoyed the article ! Great list too.
