10 Must Have Games If You're New To The PS3

The holidays are over and now it’s time to get back to work, school, and gaming on your brand new PS3! If you are one of those folks who is a noobie on Sony’s black beauty, you might want to make sure that your new treasure is used to the full. Don’t worry, there are plenty of options on the PlayStation 3 when it comes to gaming. So as we continue covering must have games to get for different systems, here are ten (currently available – in no particular order) games that you will want to look into if you are new to the PS3.

Uncharted (series)

Nathan Drake: Uncharted’s main protagonist and the poster boy for the PlayStation 3 system. The Uncharted series boasts a cinematic and action packed gaming experience unlike any other with graphics that push the limit of the console, engaging gameplay, and stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception are all must haves for the PlayStation 3 both for an amazing single player experience and Uncharted 2 and 3 include multiplayer fun as well. The series really skyrocketed to success after the release of Uncharted 2 which won dozens of Game of the Year awards. Fortunately for you, Sony has put together a nice affordable bundle that comes with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves so you can enjoy the series from the very start. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, which recently released, is not to be neglected though. Make sure you pick this one up along the way as well.

Little Big Planet (1 and 2)

Media Molecule revolutionized the platform gaming genre with this experimental game which put the player in control of his/her surroundings. Play. Create. Share. That was the idea behind Little Big Planet and that was the idea that launched it to success. Little Big Planet offers endless content to play alone or with up to four friends! In addition to a story mode with loads of fun for your little sackboy and sackgirl characters, there is a massive online community that is constantly putting out new levels and games that they created with the Little Big Planet in-game tools. You can create your own levels, design your own costumes, even make full games to play and share with others around the world. Really, your imagination is all that limits you with this series. I highly recommend these games for anyone who loves a good platforming game, people who like to play with friends, and those with an insatiable creative side. All LBP content is backwards compatible with LBP 2 such as costumes and levels. If you do decide to pick up LBP, get the GOTY edition for all of the extra content, the story for that game, and an introduction to the series. Little Big Planet 2 expands vastly on that first game and is now in a complete and affordable “Special Edition” with most of the updates, PlayStation Move integration, and loads of DLC.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Released back in 2008 and still one of the highest rated PlayStation 3 games down to this day, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is touted as the best PS3 game by many core followers of the series. While that’s up for debate, what’s not is that this critically acclaimed game is truly a must have. Continuing the franchise following the iconic Solid Snake, MGS 4 features an aging and exhausted Solid Snake in the middle of a futuristic battlefield. Snake is equipped with a crucial new device tentatively known as “OctoCamo,” a high-tech suit that dynamically transforms its texture based on Snake’s surroundings. This gameplay mechanic “allows him to seamlessly blend into the environment, providing him with the means to stalk his enemies like never before. This latest chapter in Hideo Kojima’s legendary tactical espionage actin series marks the return of several characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games including Revolver Ocelot, Meryl Silverburgh, Naomi Hunter and Raiden, and features an unforgettable story that depicts the desperate state of the future as seen through the eyes of an older Solid Snake. ”

Killzone (2 and 3)

It may not have had its start on the PlayStation 3, but the Killzone series surely finds its home there. A great FPS series, Killzone 2 and 3 follow the story after the Helghast assault on Vekta, the ISA have taken the fight to the enemy’s home world of Helghan. Players lead a group of highly trained soldiers on a mission to take out the Helghast threat. The team quickly discovers that the Helghast are a formidable enemy on their home planet. Not only have they adjusted to the planet’s hostile conditions, they have also harnessed a source of power they can now use against the ISA. Sev discovers his squad isn’t just fighting enemy forces – their fiercest opponent may be the planet itself. Couple Killzone 3 with PlayStation Move capabilities, this game truly takes FPS’ to a whole new level. Both Killzone 2 and 3 are noted for their robust online features as well. Try them out!

Resistance (series)

Truly an unsung hero of the over saturated FPS genre, Insomniac’s Resistance series is one of the best this generation has to offer. With an intricate story, massive battles, nail-biting action, and loads of awesome weapons, the Resistance series truly steps out of the mold. Resistance is a science fiction horror series that takes place in an alternate history in the early to mid 1900’s. Instead of the world reeling from world war, you find that an alien civilization known as the Chimera have invaded and conquered much of Earth, expanding their armies by capturing humans and transforming them into monster-like supersoldiers to fight on their behalf. This game is not about winning the war, it’s about surviving. The player takes the role of one of the remaining human armed forces as they fight against the Chimera invasion. The series is noted for its use of both conventional and futuristic weaponry, reflecting Insomniac’s work on the Ratchet & Clank series. The Resistance series also has great online modes and multiplayer options.

Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo, a name synonymous with the racing genre. Gran Turismo 5 is the latest in the line of GT games for PlayStation consoles. This game brings over 1000 cars and dozens of tracks to race on. Known for its signature beauty and precision, the highly anticipated racer showcases new jaw-dropping cars, real-life tracks, and diverse racing styles. Gran Turismo 5 delivers exciting advancements to the series in the most comprehensive racing and car simulation experience ever.  Gran Turismo 5 XL drops on January 17th with all updates and a lot of DLC.

Heavy Rain

There is still a debate that goes on: Is Heavy Rain a game? Is it an interactive movie? Whatever you want to call it, I call it another must have for the PS3.  This dark horse provided players with an intricate story of love, passion, deceit, and mystery. The theme? How far would you go for love? The thing that set this game apart was the fact that every choice you make in the game has consequences. It really put you in control and involved you on a deeper level, truly immersing you into the settings and putting yourself in your character’s shoes. What would you do in their situation? The game has several endings and several outcomes depending on how you play it. Last November, a Director’s Cut of the game was released. In addition to the original game, Heavy Rain: Director’s Cut includes DLC, the original soundtrack, bonus videos, and more. Pick it up for a low price at any of your local gaming stores.

Flower

Flower, although a downloadable title, is one that should really be tried out.  With simple gameplay, the surrounding environment is pulled to the forefront and becomes the primary “character.” The player fades from an external and stressful world in the opening of this refreshing game which will take you on journeys through beautifully vivid landscapes, where you will change the surroundings and exploring nature along the way. Playing as the wind, you get to guide and grow a swarm of pedals by interacting with other flowers and the surrounding environment. The game is completely motion controlled using the simple SIXAXIS features in your wireless controls. Flower’s gameplay offers different experiences, pacing and rhythm to all players. Critics, hardcore, and casual gamers alike have come to appreciate this game as an incredible work of art in design, music, and gameplay that takes you off of the beaten path that games tend to tread.

Ratchet and Clank (series)

The Ratchet and Clank series has deep roots in the PlayStation brand with games spanning across the PS2, PSP, and PS3. The platformer/action adventure games take place in a strange and vast universe following the adventures of the Lombax Ratchet and his trusty sidekick robot and best friend, Clank, as they travel through the universe, saving it from evil forces on a regular basis. The series is noted for its many exotic and unique weapons and devices that add to the fun and over the top action in the series.  While the pictures just show R&C Future: Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time, don’t forget Quest for Booty which connects the two stories and then All 4 One, the latest installment in the series which is built around 4 player co-op action.

God of War (series)

God of War III is the only God of War game truly made for the PlayStation 3. However, the whole series including the first two games from the PS2 and the PSP games have been revamped in HD for the PS3 as well in special collections. So now you can join Kratos in all five of his games, on his question to unleash his brutal rage on anyone who gets in his way to destroy those who reside on Mt. Olympus, those who betrayed him, especially Zeus. The series has received critical acclaim for graphics, combat/gameplay, and story. Be be warned, this bloody franchise is not for the faint of heart!

This is NOT a top 10 list and unfortunately we couldn’t cover every great game or series released on the PS3. I cheated a little and counted game series as one here just to get some more in. Soooooo if there are some other games for PS3 that you think are must have games, make sure to leave a comment below and discuss in our community forums!!
