You may have read the article 10 Must Have Titles If You’re New To The 360 previously posted on our site. Well, you didn’t think that we were going to leave out the rest of the systems, did you? Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be releasing lists for almost all of the mainstream systems and devices. We know that it’s getting near that time where a lot of you will be shopping like crazy, so here are some must have games to look out for if you’re new to the DS (in no particular order. Please be aware that one series of games may be included together).

Mario Kart DS

No Nintendo system is complete without a Mario Kart game. Mario Kart DS is still one of the best selling and highest rated titles on the Nintendo DS since its release back in 2005. The game combines many retro Mario Kart elements along with newer karts, tracks, and modes, just for the DS. This is undoubtedly a must have for any DS owner.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Another series that goes hand in hand with every Nintendo system is the Legend of Zelda. Phantom Hourglass brought Zelda to the DS for the first time, following Link on his journey to find Tetra – and his way back to the seas he once knew. Phantom Hourglass included several features utilizing all the DS has to offer such as the touch screen, and microphone, along with the DS’ built in Wi-Fi for online and local multiplayer. If you are a Zelda fan and have a DS, this is a no-brainer.

New Super Mario Bros.

Well, without meaning to sound redundant, every Nintendo system needs its Mario games. New Super Mario Bros. takes a new spin on the side scrolling adventure of Mario and his quest to save Princess Peach from Bowser and his minions.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

The Dragon Quest series has always been a popular series for Nintendo and Square-Enix. One of the more recent installments on the DS, DQ IX, was also one of the highest rated in the series. Developed by LEVEL 5, DQ IX marks a first for the series in many ways including being centered on 4-Player multiplayer capabilities. You create your hero, you create your adventure, you lead your team. This is an RPG not to be missed! Of course, this is not to say other Dragon Quest games should be left out either. Make sure to check them all out when you get the chance!

Professor Layton (series)

A British professor wearing a top hat, a spunky little lad, both solving puzzles and mysteries. What’s not to love? This charming LEVEL 5 series brings brain teasers and puzzles together with beautifully animated cut scenes with full voice over acting, all bundled in clever little stories that both kids and adults will love. I highly recommend this whole series, but why not start at the beginning. Professor Layton and the Curious Village was the first in the series and I think that you should start there. But once you are done with that game, move on to the next! They are all connected in more ways than one. Check all of the Professor Layton games out and you will see what I mean.

Pokemon (series)

So, you want to be a master of Pokemon? Do you have a DS to be number one? The quest to catch them all can be found in various forms on the DS. Pokemon, hate it or love it, is still very much alive and popular on the DS. Most games have the same basic formula, you are a Pokemon tamer out to catch and train some Pokemon on a quest to battle your way to the top! At the same time, there are even some games that allow you to go on a whole new adventure, even as a Pokemon yourself! So, for you little monster hunters out there, Pokemon is still a great series to get. One of the highest rated and also more recent releases of the series on the DS were Pokemon Black and White. Pick up a copy and try it out. But of course, check out all of the Pokemon DS games to catch them all!

Ace Attorney (series)

You’ll find no objection in my suggestion to play the Ace Attorney series. These cleverly contrived games put you in the seat of one of a few attorneys in the Japanese legal system. Your duty? Well, prove your clients not guilty of course! You will be tasked with investigations, cross examinations, evidence presentation, and more as the fate of your client lays in your hands. The whole Ace Attorney series is great. But as with most series, you should start at the first game released, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. But once you are done with that one, don’t forget all of the other Ace Attorney games!

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

Mario and Luigi got a little tired of their regular side scrolling job and decided to defeat Bowser with a little different strategy this time around. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story takes the Italian brothers on a turned based RPG adventure, basically three stories in one. The third RPG Mario game, Bowser’s Inside Story is great for Mario fans who are not satisfied with just jumping on a Koopa’s head and moving along. You will have to solve puzzles and use your skills to defeat enemies in this game. Highly rated and highly recommended, Bowser’s Inside Story is another must play RPG on the DS.

Animal Crossing: Wild World

I must admit, the Animal Crossing series is a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It’s such a cute and fairly addictive game. If you’re not familiar with the series, you pretty much make your own character and live life in a little town doing whatever you want. Simple enough. You can plant trees and flowers, decorate your home, meet the towns folk (which are animals by the way) and more! And even when you are not playing, the town keeps going. You can see the changes as time goes on, just like a real town! What’s more, with Wild World, you also have the ability to link up your DS online and invite some friends over for a look at your town, or you can visit theirs too!

Chrono Trigger

While Chrono Trigger isn’t exactly a DS exclusive, it is one of the best if not the best presentations of the classic RPG. The DS version contains many enhancements to the PSOne port along with newer translations and use of the dual screens on the DS clearing the top screen from clutter. If you’re up to playing a classic RPG with all of the wit, humor, and action still intact, pick up Chrono Trigger for the DS. This is one you do not want to miss.

Now, we couldn’t list all  of the must have titles that you can find on the DS, this is just a small sampling to get you started. For sure there are already more great DS games available and more that will be coming out soon. So keep your eyes out for them. What are some titles that you think are must haves for the DS?
